Walk on Galveston Beach

Hi Blog! Today is Tuesday and our first full day on Galveston Island.  After driving seven hours yesterday, we really didn't want to drive anywhere today.  Luckily, the Jamaica Beach RV Resort where we are staying is right across the street from the beach.  We crashed early last night and got up to sort of see the sun rise our the bedroom window.

We started the day with a walk around the campground.  Next time we'll remember to bring the camera because you won't believe how cute the alpacas are until we show you.  There is also a whole stable of horses for hire.  For those of us who are used to East Coast beaches, where the houses are piled one on top of the other, Galveston Island would surprise you. True, you find lots of beach front homes, but just behind them are acres and acres of farmland.  As we crossed the road, we just turned right and started walking down the beach.  We never did get to the end of the island.

At one point, we stopped for lunch.  We hadn't seen a seagull all day until we unwrapped our sandwiches and then two pesky rats with wings appeared and began squawking in hopes of a handout. The photo is a little fuzzy because there is an almost constant mist coming off the Gulf.  The lens of the camera was constantly clouding over, along with my sunglasses and the windows of the RV.

There weren't many folks on the beach today.  The stiff wind kept them at bay.  However, we did find one friendly local who was willing to pose for a picture.

Galveston is doing what it can to stop beach erosion.  They have created sand dunes and planted sea grass and wildflowers to hold the dunes in place.  It made for a lovely walk.

Back at camp, we put together a gumbo and drank Saint Arnold Bock Beer while watching the sunset. Unfortunately, a big rain cloud came by and rained on our parade.  Oh, well.  The sun will come out tomorrow!
