On Tuesday, April 2, we took it easy most of the day after traveling back from Albany on Monday. However, we decided that this second week in New Orleans will be "music week." Accordingly, we made reservations at Snug Harbor Jazz Club for dinner and a jazz performance Tuesday night.
The restaurant was unpretentious but clean and interesting architecturally, with local art hanging on the exposed brick walls. David had gumbo and a house salad, while Kathy had fish with a cajun shrimp cream sauce.
The show started at 8:00 pm, but we got our seats in the venue early. Here's a photo of the stage:
To accompany the jazz, we had libations - David tasted wine and Kathy sampled a legendary Hurricane:
The group this night was the Stanton Moore Trio, a jazz/funk group with Stanton Moore on the drums. We sat next to a couple from Australia, who had come to hear him. The husband is a drummer himself and told us that Stanton Moore may be the world's best drummer. In that, we were not disappointed!
Moore was joined by David Torkanowsky on the piano and James Singleton on the bass. Each of these musicians is a leader in his field individually, and each has led groups and a variety of projects, but together they were incendiary! They clearly enjoyed playing with each other and were continually carrying on musical dialogues with each other. Several times, one of the artists shoved the musical/rhythmic line off in a new direction to the amusement of the other two.
What a great first night of New Orleans jazz! Snug Harbor bills itself as "New Orleans' Premier Jazz Club," and the quality of the jazz told us this could be so. We'll have to compare Tuesday night's experience with tonight's performance and a jazz brunch this weekend.
