Adirondacks - Around Lake Abanakee

Hi Blog! Today is Sunday, October 5, 2015.  After yesterday's rain, we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood and see what we could see.  We also wanted to give the trails a chance to dry out a little before we went off hiking.

Our campground owner has collected various pieces of old farm equipment.  Here you can see all the leaves that yesterday's storm brought down.

Our campground sits on Big Brook Road.  Just around the corner, Big Brook crosses over Lake Abanakee.  We took a run down here the other day and are looking forward to investigating some of the things we saw along our run.  But first, we wanted to soak up some of the morning sun.  It got pretty cold last night - down into the 30's.

There are a number of bed-and-breakfasts and rental cabins along the lake - each trying to outdo the others. This rental cabin decided to decorate with an old gondola from Gore Mountain.

One of our neighbors rose with the morning sun to try his luck.

As we arrived at the lake, the sun was just hitting the southeast corner of the lake causing the mist to rise.  Off in the distance, Bullhead Mountain is just waking up.

It was fun watching the mist dance and spin in the morning light.

It is always fun to catch the light just right. If you turn this photo upside down it is hard to tell which is lake and which is sky.  (Ed. Kathy actually turned her laptop upside down just to check.)

Here we tried to zoom in and catch some of the remaining color.  It is fading fast, but we are hoping when we go further south we'll catch up to it again.

This rock was kind enough to pose for us. Here is the fall foliage glamour shot.

In this photo we explore the rock's blue period.

As we walked back to camp, we noticed a hole in the bank with all of these broken white shells. We did a little research and learned that female snapping turtles like to lay their eggs in the sandy lake banks.  Unfortunately, some local predator was able to locate the nest and dig out the eggs.

This last photo came from the first day we arrived at camp.  Great White and Chuck wanted a selfie with all the colorful leaves.

Time to get ready to hit the trail.  Castle Rock here we come!
