Many Moods of Meziadin

Hi Blog!

Ever since we arrived at Meziadin Lake Provincial Park on Tuesday, it has been raining. Our kayaks sat patiently on the gravel beach in front of our RV. For five straight days, we watched the rain pitter-patter on the surface of the lake. Yes, we did manage to find some things to do in the area while we waited, but we really, really, really wanted to get out and paddle and fish Meziadin Lake.

On Sunday, August 27, 2019, we finally got our chance. While there were still low clouds across the lake, the water was calm and still.

The fog slowly began to lift revealing the mountains on the other side of the lake.

Could we really be seeing blue sky?

Kathy eagerly loaded her fishing gear into her kayak as Buster looked on.

Wow! The surface of the lake was like glass.

Off we went. Paddling into the sunrise. We set an all time record by getting the kayaks in the water before 9:00 a.m.

We paddled along the lake shore until we reached the mouth of a feeder stream. Kathy set out to fish the outlet while Dave explored the stream as far as the current would let him.

While Kathy fished, Dave explored. Paddling further along the lake shore, Dave discovered another stream (or perhaps another branch of the same stream) which also had fishy activity. He paddled back toward Kathy to report his findings.

Just as Dave arrived back at the first stream outlet, Kathy yelled "fish on." Unfortunately, it wasn't big enough for dinner. (Can you find it in this photo?)

Dave on the other hand had great success stalking his prey. It's not every day you get to see a giant octopus crawling out of a lake.

After a couple hours of quiet calm, the winds began to pick up. We made our way back toward camp. We marveled at the little "islands" sprinkled along the shore line.

We were soon joined by a loon.

Just as we turned into the cove where the campground sits, we noticed something moving along the surface of the lake. We thought it might be a beaver, but it had a fish in its mouth. At least somebody had luck fishing today. We later learned this little guy was a Fisher. They are members of the weasel family.

Oh Canada! We love your Meziadin Lake.

We headed in for lunch. We are hoping that after lunch, we can take the kayaks up to Bear Glacier and kayak to the toe of the glacier. Stay tuned.
