Hi Blog. Today is Wednesday and our first full day in Perry. After a little P-90X stretch, we went to the camp office to pick up brochures for activities in the area. The young woman working in the office said there is really nothing to do in Perry. We've learned over time that when a 20-something says there is nothing to do, they mean nothing that a 20-something would like to do. We actually picked up a whole list of local attractions in the area. However, she did recommend Goodman's Bar-B-Q and raved about their smoked pork and beef. Now, how could we pass up a recommendation like that? Since we had to run into town anyway to pick up a few things, we decided to take the bikes for a spin and stop at Goodman's on the way
As we pedalled out of camp toward town, we felt like we were traveling back in time to the early 1950's and into the era of road side motels and farm stands. For Dave, it reminded him of all the road trips he and his family took through the rural Pacific Northwest, stopping at diners and dives along the way.
As we got to Goodman's, the parking lot was packed (good sign) with pickup trucks with anti-gun control bumper stickers (bad sign). The place was just what you would expect a country diner to look like inside. Lots of tin signs, farm implements, little chachkas, painted plates and, of course, dead things staring down at you while you eat. The only nod to modern times, were the six flat screen TVs placed strategically around the dinning room. If Cracker Barrel had a role model, it would be Goodman's. The smoked pork sandwiches were the best we've ever tasted. They came dry and you could add your favorite sauce - sweet, hot or spicy. The best part, was the price - cheapest lunch since Georgia. This is Florida country at its best.
THE DARK SIDE OF RV'ING:
We weren't sure there would be anything to report on the dark side today, since all we were doing was stopping. Wrong. Our hitch is locked on the back of our rig. We only have one key. We stopped at Ace Hardware to have two additional copies made of the key. Came home - the keys don't fit the locks. We'll, there goes $2.98 down the drain. Oh, did I mention that Kathy got scolded by locals not once, but twice, for holding our bikes outside the Win Dixie. Because, and I quote, "ya know, this heres a walkway." Really! I never would have guessed. So, whatever you do, don't ride your bikes to the Win Dixie. It is apparently very disturbing to the local residents. The things you learn RVing around the country.
