Hiking the Horse Brook Trail

Horse Brook Trail is a pretty, 2.5 km linear (5 km return) hiking trail located in Fortune, Newfoundland on the Burin Peninsula.  There is a trailhead with adequate parking in the town of Fortune, off Harbour Drive, at 47.069170, -55.831950, and it is graced by a well-made wooden gate:

As soon as the trail leaves the town, it runs along Horse Brook, which empties into Fortune Bay, and offers open views of the stream:

Townspeople have decorated the trail with colorful, cheerful things such as bird boxes, painted rocks, and painted signs on trees.  "Mr. Sneaky" is one of the more unique artistic constructs along the path:

At 0.5 km in, the trail reaches Horse Brook Trailer & RV Park, where a sign points the way across the campground to another trailhead, marked with a similar wooden gate, to continue the trail.  For those inclined to start at the campground, there is some limited parking at the trailhead gate, located at 47.063954, -55.832369.

From the campground, the trail crosses a side stream of Horse Brook.  It is lined with pink granite boulders:

Between Horse Brook Trailer & RV Park and the trail's far end, there are more decorations, including what is probably the most unusual construction we have seen on any trail, anywhere -- an invitation to, "Set for a While.  Relax and Go Again" -- complete with a little seat for the setting and relaxing:

The far end of the trail arrives at Hornhouse Road, which leads from Highway 220 south to the Fortune Head Lighthouse and the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve.  It boasts some parking as well for those who prefer hiking toward the town of Fortune and back.  This trailhead is at 47.054411, -55.843223.

The trailhead at Hornhouse Road is adjacent to a bridge over the stream, which presents beautiful views both downstream --

-- and upstream:

While neither strenuous or long, the trail is in excellent condition, well signed, and is a pleasant hour-or-two stroll.  We enjoyed it thoroughly.
