Our Spring Break with William was pretty much washed out by rains. But, on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, we had enough of a break in the weather that we could chance a long bike ride along the Potomac River, on the Chesapeake & Ohio National Canal Trail, from Brunswick, Maryland to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. We had pedaled this trail ourselves in 2021 and you can find our blog entry on that adventure here. However, this was a chance to introduce William to a little history, as well as a great bike adventure!
We rented William's bike from Three Points Cycle, which is just off the Trail in historic downtown Brunswick. Rental business completed, we posed for our obligatory trailhead selfy:
The trail is a level, well-surfaced bike route along the Potomac River, and offers multiple opportunities to hop off the bikes and explore both the River and the adjoining remnants of the Canal. Below, William stands under a bridge where he got up close and personal with the Potomac:
As we were walking back up to our bikes from the shore of the Potomac, William spotted this honeycomb, which had, unfortunately, fallen from a tree above us. No bees were to be found, but we examined the comb to see what it would reveal.
Our ride into Harpers Ferry was six miles. After we parked our bikes, as we walked across the pedestrian bridge -- which is part of the Appalachian Trail -- we spotted this sign that informs the hiker that s/he is about halfway along the A.T. It is fitting that the
Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which oversees the trail and its support, has its headquarters in Harpers Ferry!
But, heck, Harpers Ferry doesn't just harbor history and trail conservancy. It also has great food. We ate a scrumptious lunch
Almost Heaven Pub & Grill (named, for those of you who are observant, after the first line of John Denver's "Country Road" -- and it's located in West Virginia, to boot!
But what lunch is complete without ice cream? So we added that to our list of outdoor adventures this day:
It was an easy 6-mile pedal back to our trailhead in Brunswick. We spent most of the ride back chatting about everything we had seen on this trip.
We consider this a very Camp Sharktooth Peak Adventure, and we're glad we could take William on it!
