Fishing Taylor Pond

September 3, 2021

Hi Blog!

After yesterday's tour of Ausable Chasm, we were hoping to get a chance to fish the famous Ausable River. Unfortunately, river levels are extremely low and temperatures have been high. We are just a little early for fall trout fishing on the river. That being the case, we cast about for a stocked trout lake. Not far from where we are camped, we found Taylor Pond.

Taylor Pond is part of the greater Adirondack Park. It is located within the Taylor Pond Wild Forest. The lake has public access via a DEC campground, which includes a beach ramp boat launch. Taylor Pond is completely surrounded by public land. While there seemed to be several RVs in the campground, we had the entire lake to ourselves.

The cloudy, windy weather might have something to do with the lake being empty. Fishing in these conditions would be a challenge, but we were up for the adventure.

As we worked around the perimeter of the lake, we got a good look at Catamount Mountain. Catamount Mountain sits by itself above the plains and lakes north and east of Whiteface Mountain. The views from the summit are expansive, and include Whiteface, Taylor Pond, Union Falls Pond and even Vermont on a clear day.  From our kayaks in the middle of Taylor Pond, we enjoyed great views of Catamount Mountain.

We fought the wind as we paddle up from the boat launch. We then let the wind carry us back casting and trolling as we were pushed to the bottom of the lake.

Try as we might to get our flies down deep enough to tickle a trout, we were unsuccessful. However, we each hooked a yellow perch, which we promptly released to rejoin their friends.

While fish were hard to find, we did startle a few ducks.

The rocks seemed unmoved by our passing.

We are beginning to see the first signs of fall.

We took a closer look at the bird house along the banks.

After two hours, we decided we needed a break. We returned to the boat launch where we enjoyed our tuna sandwiches and explored the lake shore.

After lunch, the clouds began to thin giving us another nice look at Catamount Mountain.

After a vigorous paddle back into the wind, Dave enjoys a relaxing wind driven drift back to the boat launch.

The more the clouds cleared, the stronger the wind became. We called it quits at 2:00, just in time to see bright blue skies and verocious winds.

After loading the kayaks and packing up the fishing gear, we took one last look at Taylor Pond.

While it wasn't the best conditions, we each caught a fish. The sun eventually came out and we got lots, and lots of exercise. Just another day in the life of Dave and Kathy intrepid RV explorers!
