Exotic Animals in the Everglades!

On Wednesday, January 30, Jane and we decided to tour the exotic animal exhibit at the world-renowned "Skunk Ape Research Center" in the Big Cypress National Preserve, located next to our RV campground.

The diversity of animals was pretty impressive.  Aside from a collection of rare turtles and snakes from the Everglades, the owners had acquired almost a dozen parrots.  Here is a plum-headed parakeet, perhaps the most beautifully colored of the bird:

Here"s a photo of Rick, the wildlife manager, feeding one of the parrots a cashew nut by letting the bird pluck the nut from his lips with its beak.  The parrot did this repeatedly - and very gently:

Jane made friends with a baby alligator.  No one bit or got bit:

The parrots were friendly.  One of them selected Kathy as its favorite female from our group.  Another perched happily on her shoulder:

One of the parrots got pretty raucous in seeking attention, and was aptly named Sassy.  Sassy and David got along very well, and, once Sassy had David's attention and arm, Sassy seemed like a peaceful, old soul:

Jane got her turn with a parrot, too:
