House for Sale!

Pulling Up Stakes for DC

Tomorrow is Tuesday, February 28, and we'll be leaving a day early, moving the RV to our campground in the DC area.  Rain and possibly snow or sleet on Wednesday caused us to accelerate our plans by a day.

Signed, Sealed & Delivered!

Today we handed the house over to our broker for sale. All the hard cleaning is over. We're celebrating by visiting one of our favorite restaurants from our days bicycling to work - McMenamin's Pub in Germantown. This sign is on the wall over our favorite table:

More House Cleaning

This week will consist entirely of cleaning and readying the house to hand over to the broker next weekend.  Our neighbor Stephanie is our real estate broker.  As we clean and make minor repairs, we realize this is the best shape the house has been in since we bought it!  We fixed up many things when we moved in, but there were a number of items we just kept putting off.  Well, of course, there is no more putting off.  We said to ourselves today that we should KEEP the house - it looks pretty darn good with all this TLC!

Lots of Progress on the House

Today was a big day with the house.  The painters finished.  We disposed of the bedroom furniture and some other items.  And the last of the contents needing to go to friends and family left the house.  All that's left is the furniture we need to show the house.  Next week will be devoted to cleaning and some minor repairs, with the goal to hand it over to the broker before the end of the month.  Meanwhile, life with the cats goes on smoothly in the RV.  The cats have even taken to sleeping all three together on the bed - in Luckie's case, under the covers - during the daytime.  We caught them napping when we got home early from the house today.

Bye Bye Baby Blue

Another milestone passed. We're driving home from DC in our van, Big Blue, having sold our Hyundai. Eighteen days until the van has been transfered and we hit the road.

Adding Spice to Life

This morning's adventure: Kathy is labeling the spice jars so she can find them in the drawer. Such is the unbearable excitement of the RV adventure!

Let it snow!

We're expecting an inch or two of snow into this evening. It makes the campground picturesque and the RV cozy.

Kits, Cats, Sacks and Wives...

...how many are moving into the RV?  Well, today is the day that the cats moved into the RV with us.  It's been an hour and a half or so.  Flip is exploring and asking for lots of pets.  Lucky, true to his nature, found a safe place to hide by the sofa and hasn't moved an inch since he found it.  Baxter, somewhat surprisingly, went up to bed and took a nap under the covers and hasn't been seen yet.  More on their adventures as they have them.

Strolling in the Catskills

We participated this weekend in an AMC hiking trip to the Catskills, led by Bill and Lennie Steinmetz.  As it does every year, it met all our expectations.  The weather was  moderately cold, and the ground was free of snow, although some of the mountain trails were sufficiently icy that hikers needed to use micro spikes or other traction devices.  Friday was the traditional late happy hour at Lennie's and Bill's log cabin.  On Saturday, we participated in the hike led by Kevin Perry to the tops of Balsam Lake and Graham Mountains.  While the entire trail was icy, there was nice snow at the tops, and on Balsam Lake, at the fire tower, we were so protected from wind by the fir forest, that it felt like we were sunbathing.  The shadow-photo above is of our entire group, courtesy of Lisa.  Here is a link to photos we took on this hike:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/scranton21/sets/72157629191500495/  On Sunday, led by our friend Phil Hunsberger, we hiked up Windham High Peak, and, again, with the sun and lack of wind, we had a very warm lunch at the top.  Here is a link to photos we took on this hike: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scranton21/sets/72157629191523783/   We decided to extend our stay to Monday so we didn't have to drive home right away.  We had some scrumptious dinners, and had our usual breakfast each morning at Sweet Sue's in Phoenicia, where all of us stayed.  Due to trail conditions, this was the easiest Catskills weekend, and we didn't even feel the least stiffness after either day's hike.  It was just a wonderful weekend strolling with friends through the Catskills!

Vagabond Day!

Today is the official start of our vagabond existence. We moved out of the house and into the RV - mainly to make room for the painters. Today we drive (the SUV) up to the Catskills for a hiking weekend with our Appalachian Mountain Club friends. Come Monday, the cats move into the RV with us.
