How to Cook a Turkey in an RV

Today's the day we cooked our free turkey from the supermarket!  Eddie and George already woke up and discovered the turkey on the counter.

Kathy is experimenting with her first turkey cooked in a microwave convection oven.  The turkey takes up most of the space in the oven, so we weren't sure what impact that would have, or whether the convection oven would dry out the meat.  All of our internet sources said, "No problem!"  But you never know.  We baked cookies in the convection oven and they came out powdery.  People also say you should cook on faster times with convection to avoid drying out, but we've found that cooking times seem comparable with normal ovens.  So who knows whether this bird will come out a real turkey?

We had the turkey thawing for several days in the fridge:

The final thawing touches occured in the sink, where we gave the turkey a lukewarm bath, with the raw materials for the stuffing sitting in wait on the side:

Kathy cooked up the celery, onion and turkey sausage to add to the stuffing:

Meanwhile, Tom Turkey came out of his bath and was eager to get started:

Here Kathy assembles the stuffing:

...and here some of the stuffing goes into the turkey:

Believe it or not, a 14 pound turkey actually fit in our convection microwave!

When it came out after 4.5 hours, it was perfect!  The skin was crispy and tasty, the meat moist:

Our friends Ginny and Eric dropped by for the afternoon and for dinner.  Eric brought over the Mad Elf to salute the holiday season:

We spent the 4.5 hours watching the turkey cook and playing a rousing, EXTENDED game of Chuckluck.  David regrets that, because Kathy beat the pants off the rest of us.

After a scrumptious dinner of turkey, stuffing, cranberry dressing and baked rutabagas, we were as stuffed as the turkey, and spent the rest of the evening enjoying the tastes of that wonderful turkey dinner!

Eric and Ginny leave tomorrow, and we'll bid them a fond farewell.  We'll miss them, but we expect to bump into them on future travels.

Safe travels, you two!
